Egg Sandwich
The Egg Sandwich project is an initiative of the Rupununi Livestock Producers Association (RLPA) to reshape the Rupununi poultry sector. The project is financed by the Greater Guyana Initiative (GGI), a partnership between the Stabroek Block co-venturers ExxonMobil, Hess, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), and the People of Guyana, and is being implemented by The Consultancy Group (TCG), a local consulting firm, in partnership with RLPA.
Developing a set of social, ecological, production and animal welfare standards to govern the local production, post-harvest handling and sale of poultry meat and eggs. These standards will be developed in several rounds of consultations with producers, and are currently focused on hygienic slaughter, packaging and presentation. A free-range campaign to introduce more ecologically sustainable systems of poultry production and improve resilience to feed supply shocks. Establishing, staffing and operating an RLPA-owned hatchery to effectively supply chicks to local producers, and improve resilience to supply chain disruptions. Strengthening RLPA’s management capacity and the organization’s capacity to generate non-donor income. During Phase-I of the Sandwich, we have focused on improving financial management, and maximizing returns from investments in RLPA’s signature event, the Rupununi Ranchers Rodeo.
